Pears are cultivated in Chile’s central regions. A total of sixteen different types of pears are grown in Chile. They all have two things in common: outstanding flavour and an intensive aroma. Chile markets 10% of the world’s pears.

Chilean Pears are available from January to October. 

 
Varieties

A variety which is sensitive to bruising. The colour changes from green to yellow as it matures.

This is a large necked variety with a golden green colour which becomes darker as it ripens.

It has a very fragrant taste, with white pulp, creamy and juicy.

This has a more round shape than most other pears, with a smooth skin. 
There is a little colour change as the pear ripens. It is juicy and sweet.
 
Storage
Pears have a storage life of about 1 - 5 months.
Storage temperature should be 32° F (0°C), with a relative humidity of about 90 - 95%.
Store on dry clean flooring.
Don’t stack cases more than five or six levels high.
Pears mature in 3 to 5 days after removal from cold storage.
Once mature, they last a couple of days.

Display
The greener the pear, the more robust it is.
The pears are easy to mature if they are green and ready to eat if they are yellow.
Handle pears very carefully when they are ripe.


Asian Pears
Asian Pears come from the East and include a great variety of pears with flesh with a lot of juice.
There are three kinds of Asian Pears:


Round fruit with green and yellow skin.
Round fruit with brown skin.
Fruit with the typical shape of the European pear, with green and brown skin.

Varieties
It has a rough skin, firm pulp, and is crunchy and sweet. Its shelf life is excellent. It may keep for up to two weeks.
This variety has a smooth yellowish green skin. Round shaped and medium sized, it is crunchy and has a good, sweet taste with a high degree of acidity.
The skin is golden brown, rough, and the fruit is medium sized to large. It is sweet, juicy, crunchy and not very acid.
 

Storage
Can be stored from 1 to 5 months.
Maintain at 32°F (0° C).
Although they can last a week at room temperature, it is best to refrigerate them.

Display
Display the fruit that is most round in shape, and which is most firm, crunchy and fragrant. The stem should be intact.
When green pears turn slightly yellow it means that they are ripe.
The russet varieties (brownish) should have a golden, red brown colour. The flesh is white and very crunchy and juicy.
Asian pears are generally sold when ready to eat.
